| "The Head Of A Queen Mother" shown here is normally ascribed, on stylistic grounds, to the sixteenth century, that is, the end of the Early period...The title of queen mother was introduced to Benin by King (Oba) Esigie about the beginning of the sixteenth century to honor his own mother, Idia...The first brass memorial heads of this form are, accordingly, assigned to this period...The peaked coiffure, representing a headdress of coral beads, is peculiar to the queen mother and, according to one version, is termed "the chicken's beak." While the oba was associated with powerful agressive animals such as the leopard, queen mothers had a special link with the cockerel, representations of which appeared on altars dedicated also to the mothers of kings...FRESH! | |||||||||||||||||||||
