| During his period of greatest activity, 1947- 49, Dameron led a significant band at the Royal Roost on 52nd Street...The featured trumpeter was "Fats Navarro", whose melodic gifts and balanced technique were easier for other trumpeters to emulate than those of the more virtuosic Gillespie...Prior to his death in 1950, Navarro made several important studio recordings with Dameron (The Squirrel, 1947 and Lady Bird, 1948) and Powell (Bouncing with Bud and 52nd Street Theme, 1949), as well as aircheck recordings with Dameron and Parker, that would enhance his legend decades after his death - "John Edward Hasse" | ||||||||||||||||||||||
